A rainy day in the kitchen studio looks like this... Getting to grips with the messy middle of the painting process no one talks about.

I've discovered the joys of using isopropyl alcohol and acrylic paints. It gives some amazing effects that I love. It makes a painting look like brightly coloured layered marble or polished granite. It's gorgeous 🥰

I also had a fun time paint spraying frames in a damp, cold, and dark shed because it was too rainy 🌧️ to paint outside.

Had a great evening at @skergallery with @artofthefairytale and all the other amazing Welsh artists for the launch of the fungi and mushroom exhibit for #worldfungiday

My piece "Gaia's Gathering" is on display and is for sale via a sealed bid system, as are all pieces of work on display there. You can either bid in person at the Reserve or online. The gallery will be showcasing each piece over the next few days.

The exhibition runs through to Nov 5th

I've started sketching out the underpainting for my next project, themed on inspirational women.
I've decided to base this painting on my husband's grandmother, who I have written about in the past. She was a Polish political prisoner of war and survivor of Ravensbrück and Sachsenhausen. She was denied the chance to complete her studies in medicine in Poland because of the war, but when she came to the UK, she studied art and education and became a much loved teacher, here in Abergavenny.
Sadly, Elena is no longer with us, but her influence lives on.

Introducing my new painting, it's called "Genesis: Let there be Fairy Lights!"
I had a theme to work on, which was "Festive and Frosty" and when you look at the painting under regular lighting conditions it looks very frosty, but under UV light, that's when the festive fairy lights really stand out!
Also, when I was painting it I realised I was creating something that really made me feel like this was how the metaphorical birth of fairy lights came about, hence the name includes Genesis.
I really love this painting, it was so much fun to create.

I've been finalising and preparing my painting for gallery submission, adding a few finishing touches making sure things are tidy, signing and stringing the back.
I've enjoyed creating this painting and although it's a slightly different style for me, all the elements that I usually incorporate are there. The neon is there, the glow in the dark is there, the gold leaf is there, as are the orbs. It's based on a fungi theme and it's in a mythical forest. I've tried to incorporate the bioluminescence and the unseen communication pathways of the fungi and trees I didn't want to do a study of specific fungi so I've called the ones that appear in painting non-descript fungi.
It's all entirely made up and unplanned and I think that's how I prefer to paint.
I'm not entirely sure that I recall ever sketching out a painting first, before I lay the paint on the canvas, but it was enjoyable doing that i'm glad i've completed it now and i'm glad i've handed it over to the curator today so it will be in the @skergallery very soon.

This is a quick update on the glazing fix post that I made and how to fix mistakes in an acrylic painting.
If you remember, I'd made some glazes using clear PVA glue, acrylic paint, and water; then I got worried that the glazes would react to the liquid varnish I was going to use over the top so I needed to think of a fix so that the glazes wouldn't get wet and get sticky.
Anyway, my idea to use an initial coat of #Liquitex spray satin varnish worked really well. There has been no reaction whatsoever between the glazes and subsequent thin coats of varnish. I'm super happy 😁

I wanted this painting to feel like a portal, a glimpse into another dimension and place we would not normally see.

However, as I'm almost at the finish line with this painting, I've realised I've made an irritating mistake. I now needed to figure out how to fix mistakes in acrylic painting.

My mistake was that I had used clear PVA glue in a couple of glazes that I made up for the orbs. This meant I couldn't use a liquid varnish over the top of them because the PVA would become sticky again. Luckily I hadn't used white PVA because that would also mean the glazes would become milky. Anyway, I realised I could use spray varnish as a sealant over the glazes prior to any further finishing touches and final coats of varnish.

The result was that the spray varnish created a protective layer over the glaze, without wetting it and has dried so I can continue finishing the painting tomorrow.

This work in progress is a little different for me. Although it has all my usual elements, it's an abstract acrylic with faux gold leaf, neon, and phosphorescent glow in the dark paint, which still makes it a unique, expressive, abstract painting for art lovers.
The feelings I've had when painting this have been different; I've based it on a fungi theme for #fungiday in October and I've thought about how the fungi network acts as the 'Wood wide web'. Mycorrhizal fungi acts as a social network connecting all the trees and vegetation in a surrounding area or forest (check out oneearth.org for more interesting facts).
I thought about how humanity is essentially unconscious to this communication all around and I have tried to put those thoughts onto canvas.
I still have a way to go to finish this, but on reflection I'm quite pleased with it 🍄

If you had told me a year ago, after picking up a paint brush for the first time since the 90s, that I would have achieved so much in such a short space of time, I would never have believed you.
I've sold my original art, completed my first commission, taken part in a business emporium, and signed up to display my work at an art fair in London next year. All this whilst slowly improving my mental health too.
I've worked hard and will continue to do so, this is just the start of my life as an artist and I can't wait to see where my hard work takes me.

Sometimes I grieve for past Claire, for things she experienced that she shouldn't have; for experiences she should have had but didn't.
Then I remember that the past has created the badass, determined woman I am today; one foot in a corporate world of clinical research, and the other foot now firmly planted as an artist in an ever increasing creative landscape.
As Andy Warhol alluded to in this quote, you can't wait for time to make life better for you, you need to grab and take advantage of opportunities as they appear. If they don't present themselves to you then you need to take responsibility for your own future and make your own opportunities. We have the power to influence our future, by the choices we make. If you take a wrong turn, make sure the next turn gets you back on the path you want.

I've had the best day!
My first emporium and art market. The first time I've publicly bared my soul in person and not had the relative safety net of a small screen separating me and you.
It was a great day networking, meeting like-minded people and learning new things. I thought of today as a training exercise and I know I have learnt a lot, I even managed to sell a painting and a couple of other bits and pieces 🥰✨

Thank you to my darling husband, Guy for providing the transport and helping with the packing, unpacking, and repacking again. Also to Dan for driving all the way down from Cheltenham to support his old mum 🥰

Someone told me that you shouldn't paint with neon because it was too crafty. It wasn't art. But I think that's a load of rubbish because painting with neon makes me really happy, I love making abstract statement pieces, and with a state of things at the moment we all need something that sprinkles a bit of joy in our life. Anyway I unapologetically paint with neon. I use phosphorescent paint, I love a bit of glow in the dark and I also use gold leaf. So join me if you like bold unique colour and abstract art that is made from the heart, my heart! My art is textured, expressive, and vibrant because that's what I feel. I need to create something that counteracts gloom, so this is what I do. This is what you see!

I was feeling anxious so I've had a super quick practice run at setting up the table for the emporium/market at @kenfig_farmers_market @skergallery on Sunday. My table at home is a lot smaller than the one I'll have there so I didn't try and put everything out, but I'm really pleased with how it looks.

The Weird Sisters, acrylic on canvas finished in satin varnish, 8"x10", framed, signed on reverse, £140 individually or £400 for the trio.

My three #neon and #glowinthedark abstract paintings are finished. I love them so much, they look amazing in my kitchen, but they would look eye-catching in any space.

As I took inspiration from Shakespeare's Macbeth and the three witches for these paintings (Sister one, Sister two, and Sister three), I had to try my best to make neon look dark and foreboding (not an easy task), I think I pulled it off. There is enough shade and depth in them to deliver that and the overall ambiguity and mystery of the witches. Additionally, I added the glowing orbs to represent multiple prophecies that the witches present that weave their effect throughout the play.

There is nothing wrong with being exactly who you are!

I spent far too many years being too scared to do anything, which is why it's taken me to get to 50 to start taking painting and art seriously. Now, I'm constantly trying to push myself out of my comfort zone and find different challenges for myself. It's scary, but I like it. I'll either succeed or I'll learn something new.

I also spent far too many years wearing black. Colour makes me happy so that's what you're getting, I refuse to compromise my palette to make anyone else comfortable ✨♥️

I want to thank Lorna and Lorraine at @artofthefairytale for accelerating my dreams, boosting my confidence like it's never been boosted before, providing guidance, and generally being the kind of women every woman needs on their side. You know that feeling when you can't switch your mind off? I've tried traditional meditation, clearing my mind in a peaceful environment, but I just can't do it. The only thing that works for me is painting and painting pictures that are so busy and full of life and colour that your eyes and your mind get lost in them: you get drawn in and forget everything else for a while.
I've started creating a series of paintings to help, each one is based on a chakra and is titled with a suitable mantra. The first three I have finished are 'Time to Reflect - I Speak', 'Time to Reflect - I love', and 'Time to Reflect - I Feel'.

It costs a lot of money to get things ready for a craft market and I'm funding it all from my regular job, so I need to save money where I can.
I have a lot of these A5 size original artwork in my office and I wondered what I could do with them. Quite a while ago on Instagram (before I had ever thought about selling anything I created), I saw an artist cutting out her old artworks and repurposing them in different ways (I'm sorry I can't remember who it was), so I thought I could do similar and make some business cards.
I already have a stamp that I use as an authenticator for my art, so I just got another cheap one with my name on and a circle punch and started creating these.
I really like them, they're simple and effective and each one is a free piece of original abstract art 🥰✨

I fairly recently realised that I'd given myself a third job to keep me occupied.
Art and creating has moved from something I started to help my mental health, to something that is potentially going to provide me a third income. I guess, if I insist on keeping my brain active I may as well get something out of it in return!

I love creating these spheres in my paintings.I don't think of them as bubbles, although I have occasionally called them bubbles.They're too solid to be bubbles.I love them because they create a sense of depth and movement just another part of the painting, another dimension to look at.
They kind of bring everything together and as you're looking at them your eyes move around the painting because they have the ability to provide a sense of movement as well.
So i start off drawing them in places where I think they would add interest and then I use an acrylic pen or paint and give them a layer of white and then I choose what colours I want to make them following that. So you can see here I'm starting off with the initial white layer and then over the next couple of days I'll er I'll finish them off with some colour.

Who doesn't love to smile!? My painting titled 'Cranial Vault' is something that brings me joy every time I glance at it. As someone that has lived with #depression for as long as I can remember, and was diagnosed with #CPTSD many years ago, I'm excellent at putting a face on, but sometimes it slips and I need a little help getting it together again.
I love to surround myself with lots to make me smile, colour, music, art, my dogs, books, curiosities, anything. Anything that brings me joy can stay in my life as long as it likes, and this painting is definitely one of them.

Thinking ahead for an abstract autumn theme and seeing how much fun(gi) I can have with different textures. I'm using acrylic paints with tissue paper and sheep's wool.
